On his latest EP, LA-based selector and producer Michael Fam takes house music back to basics in the best way possible, embodying every sense of the release title: ‘Pure’
No fuss. No bullshit. An unfiltered manifestation of frequencies that inspire movement on all levels, recorded and pressed into the original dance music format: vinyl. Nothing will be compressed when these cuts hit your ears before reverberating into your soul.
All four tracks define a sound of feeling and groove; the adept application of less is more.
On the title track a seething vocal welcomes you into the EP, communicating with intention as much as words. The swirling effects allow the syllables to coalesce with the natural swing of the rhythm section.
Oscillating, sporadic waves of synth throughout “Feel It” contrast the bass line which demonstrates how it’s the details in music that make all the difference. Even if you don’t hear it, you can feel it.
“The High” takes things in a direction more aligned with the driving momentum of tech house. Raw, unfiltered four on the floor which Fam decorates with glistening interludes.
Dominic Marceux joins Fam on “Almost Home” for a heater fit for Paradise Garage. The chemistry between this pair of artists is beyond reproach. As they come together the “less is more” aesthetic is altered slightly as Marceux seamlessly contributes his talent for melody.
